Luchs Unicum Guide/Review, Playing the Long Game

I review the Luchs, a tier 4 German light tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with a replay of a tier 7 Tundra battle.

Stat line: Ace Tanker, 1.4k damage, 3 kills, 2 spots

The Luchs is an incredibly mobile burst damage dealer, but the player needs to manage the autocannon carefully. By applying the tactics discussed in this guide, I averaged a 4k WN8 and 70% win rate through 100 solo battles with silver ammo only.

Strengths and Weaknesses
+ superb turning radius
+ excellent burst damage per clip (300)
+ excellent top speed
+ good silver ammo penetration relative to its peers
+ good acceleration
+ good camouflage
+ good frontal gun depression of -8, goes up to -10 on the sides
– long clip reload (~16 sec)
– very poor accuracy (0.50)
– gun handling is poor, lots of reticle bloom on movement
– very susceptible to being tracked
– somewhat large profile for a light tank

Recommended Equipment
1. Optics
2. GLD
3. Vents: the best of the remaining options, given that the tank can’t mount a Rammer and it’s an excellent active scout so Binocs and Camo Net don’t provide as much value

Errata
1. Reload for the autocannon is ~16 sec not 20 sec
2. Per fstd on Reddit: VERY important thing that [Taugrim] neglected to mention: The 30mm cannon has a limited range, the shells just disappear after about 420m IIRC (you can see the exact range in-game if you right click on the gun). XVM users can set it up to provide you with a circle that indicates this range. The gun isn’t just bad at sniping – it is quite literally incapable of it. Don’t even bother shooting at stuff outside of view range, because the gun’s range is definitely less than 445m

This video is part of my „Road to Unicum“ series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I’m reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

How did you get the 2.5 skill crew on the Luchs? Like do you have a premium tank to train the crew before hand or?

That Tank should have "BOO!" painted on the front, and maybe some teeth! It's a Close up Monster! ☺

Thanks! Glad you're back too!  Please keep making these awesome instructional vids…I do learn so much from them.

Good point about the Leopard 16.02… before 9.18 i fully agreed with your assessment. But with the new MM and a buff to the 50mm gun, the Leopard is becoming fun to play again. I have tried both guns since the patch and have now settled on the single shot gun. Better accuracy at medium ranges, more consistent penetration (when on the flanks) and no long reload times. Lots of "pew pew" required to kill anything though especially at tier 7.

Great job/video/explanation, – just one remark considering your shots at the Hellcat at the start of the video (~00:30), though: On the minimap you can see that the target was outside the white circle and thereby too far out of your weapons reach, since that autoloader gun can only shoot up to 400m I think. (Pen was no issue, since even just hitting was impossible. :P) GG & WP anyway, & thx for the vid. 🙂

it's not that you couldn't hit the hellcat because of the accuracy, the gun actually has a maximum range. Meaning your shells can only travel a certain distance

good too have you back, I have been playing the Luchs forever, it was my first tier 3 tank, back wen it was tier 3, and now still get it out once a month or so great fun, and no even more OP as it does not sees tier 7 anymore

I'm so glad you're back Taugrim!!! xD

2:42 Super long aimtime of 20 sec Kappa

Awesome video, one tip from a average player to a unicum, use the "scroll" to zoom out, otherwise when you switch into "sniper mode" you end up zoomed at x8 (or more if you use the extended zoom in the settings), and it's very hard to aim like that. Good luck and thank you for the awesome videos 🙂

You did not pen the Hellcat at the start, because the shell only travels 400m max (it just is like this, because of the gun)…

Great to see you back Taug. looking forward to your vids.

You can sorta snipe with it…. you just have to slow burst when at any distance longer than point blank… definitely not a sniper though.

Who the hell wants to wait ~16 seconds of 95mm pen machine gun reload in a tier 7 battle?
Especially when the grind to it takes so faaaking long because idiot teams
